Dynasty Waiver Wire Week 5: The Leftovers — Is Jalen Royals a Must Add?

by | Oct 9, 2026 | Dynasty Strategy

One of these Chiefs WRs is a must own. Pay before the breakout.

Waivers ran last night at 10 PM ET, which means the obvious dynasty waiver wire Week 5 targets are already gone. That is when things get interesting.

The players worth watching now are the leftovers — the guys still sitting on the wire after the big rush. They may not have the stats yet, but their situations could change quickly. This week, one situation stands out above everything else: Kansas City.

The Chiefs Wide Receiver Situation Heading Into the Week 5 Bye

The Chiefs head into their Week 5 bye after losing two wide receivers in their Week 4 win over the Raiders. Rashee Rice exited with a hamstring injury, while Tyquan Thornton suffered a serious ankle injury expected to sideline him for roughly 3–4 months. Legitimate rumors have already surfaced that Kansas City could bring back Tyreek Hill — something every dynasty manager needs to monitor.

But here is the bigger question: what if Tyreek Hill isn’t the Tyreek Hill we remember?

He is 32 years old, coming off a major knee injury, and there is no guarantee he immediately returns as the dominant fantasy receiver who once terrorized defenses in Kansas City. That is why I am far more interested in the young receivers already inside the building.

1. Jalen Royals — The Dynasty Must Add

If Jalen Royals is still sitting on your dynasty waiver wire after Week 5 waivers, go get him.

This is exactly the type of player dynasty managers should target before the breakout rather than after it. Royals was a fourth-round pick by Kansas City in 2025 and is now in his second NFL season. The production has not been there yet in 2026, but dynasty is not about chasing this week’s box score. It is about identifying where opportunity is about to open up — and Kansas City’s wide receiver room just created a massive amount of it.

Jalen Royals’ Week 4 Snap Share Jumped to 63%

The development that really stood out was Royals’ snap share in Week 4. He played 63% of the Chiefs’ offensive snaps — easily the highest mark of his season (his previous high was just 19% in Week 3). It did not result in a catch, so we are not pretending the breakout has already happened. But the usage is worth watching closely.

Both Thornton and Rice have already shown they can produce fantasy points in this offense, including weeks where each finished among the top-20 PPR wide receivers. The production can be there for a Chiefs receiver. Now Royals is getting a real chance to be that guy.

Pay Before the Breakout

You do not want to wait until Royals catches five balls for 80 yards and a touchdown before deciding he is worth a roster spot. By then, everyone in your league will know.

Patrick Mahomes is still his quarterback. Kansas City is dealing with major uncertainty at wide receiver. Thornton is out for an extended period, Rice is dealing with another injury, and the team has a Week 5 bye to figure out exactly how it wants to distribute those snaps.

The Tyreek Hill rumors complicate the picture, but they should not stop you from making a cheap bet on Royals. Hill could return and look like his old self. He could return as a diminished version of himself. He could sign elsewhere. There are simply too many variables to treat his potential arrival as a reason to ignore a young receiver already earning meaningful playing time.

Royals is the guy I want to bet on before the market catches up.

2. Cyrus Allen — The Deep Dynasty Stash

If Royals is already gone, my next Chiefs receiver pickup is Cyrus Allen.

This one is more of a true dynasty stash. Allen was selected by Kansas City in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft and enters the league at 23 years old. He also brings an interesting college profile: at Cincinnati in 2025, Allen led the team with 51 receptions and 674 receiving yards while hauling in 13 touchdown passes.

We are not going to pretend a fifth-round rookie with no regular-season production is suddenly a fantasy WR1. That is not the argument. The argument is that the Chiefs suddenly need young receivers to step into larger roles — and Allen is one of the players who could benefit.

Why Cyrus Allen Is Worth a Dynasty Roster Spot

There are two ways a young player becomes valuable in dynasty. Sometimes the player earns the opportunity. Other times the opportunity finds the player. Allen is now getting the second kind.

The Week 5 bye gives Andy Reid and the coaching staff time to reorganize the receiver room. If Allen comes out of the bye playing meaningful snaps and producing, his waiver-wire price will change quickly. That is what makes him worth stashing right now. You are not buying the production. You are buying the possibility that the production is coming.

What About Tyreek Hill Returning to the Chiefs?

Tyreek Hill is reportedly a real possibility for Kansas City after the injuries to Rice and Thornton. Obviously, if the Chiefs sign him, his presence changes the equation. But I would not panic and drop Royals or Allen.

The old Tyreek Hill could completely reshape the Chiefs’ offense. But expecting a 32-year-old receiver coming back from a major knee injury to immediately become the player who terrified defenses in his prime is a very different proposition. And even if Hill returns, Kansas City will still need young receivers.

The Dynasty Waiver Wire Lesson

This is why I love the leftovers column. The players are not supposed to look obvious. If they were obvious, they would not still be sitting on your waiver wire after claims ran. You are looking for the player whose value can change dramatically over the next few weeks.

Jalen Royals is that player for me this week. Cyrus Allen is the deeper stash.

If you have the roster space, I would rather put one of these players on my bench now than wait until the fantasy community decides they are worth owning. Because once the production arrives, you are paying more.

Pay before the breakout. That’s how you win dynasty waiver wires.

Dynasty Waiver Wire Week 5: The Bottom Line

Jalen Royals — MUST ADD
The combination of Kansas City, Patrick Mahomes, Thornton’s injury, and uncertainty surrounding Rice makes Royals one of my favorite dynasty waiver-wire adds this week. The biggest development is not his box score yet — it is that his role is growing, with a 63% snap share in Week 4 after topping out at just 19% the week before.

Cyrus Allen — DEEP STASH
The rookie has not produced yet, but he has NFL draft capital, a strong college touchdown résumé, and a suddenly interesting opportunity in Kansas City.

Which one would I rather have? Give me Royals. He is the guy I would be willing to pay a little more for before the breakout instead of chasing him afterward.

Dynasty Waiver Wire Week 5 FAQ

Should I pick up Jalen Royals in dynasty leagues?

Yes. Royals played a season-high 63% of Kansas City’s offensive snaps in Week 4, and with Tyquan Thornton out for months and Rashee Rice injured, his path to a bigger role is wide open. He is a must add if he is still on your dynasty waiver wire.

Is Cyrus Allen worth stashing in dynasty?

Yes, in deeper dynasty leagues. Allen is a 2026 fifth-round rookie who scored 13 touchdowns at Cincinnati in 2025, and the Chiefs’ receiver injuries give him a chance to earn snaps coming out of the Week 5 bye.

Would a Tyreek Hill return hurt Jalen Royals’ dynasty value?

It would complicate things, but it is not a reason to pass on Royals. Hill is 32 and coming off a major knee injury, and even if he returns, Kansas City will still need young receivers to fill the snaps left by Thornton and Rice.
