Stop chasing this week’s points. Start planning for the playoffs.
We’re getting to the point in the dynasty fantasy football season where every roster move matters a little more. The early-season surprises have settled down. Some teams are separating themselves from the pack, while others are looking at the standings and realizing they need to make something happen before it’s too late.
If you’re sitting on the playoff bubble, this is not the time to waste roster spots. It’s time to get ahead.
This week’s dynasty waiver wire Leftovers takes a different approach. Instead of chasing another wide receiver who might catch three passes, we’re looking at something that could help you win games over the next month: NFL defenses with favorable upcoming schedules.
We’ll target two defenses for Week 9, then look at the bigger opportunity that could give your team a serious advantage through the middle of November. This isn’t just about surviving one matchup. It’s about building a plan that carries you toward the fantasy playoffs.
The goal is simple: make your move now, take control of your destiny and earn your playoff spot.
Week 8 Dynasty Waiver Wire: Quick Take
- San Francisco 49ers D/ST: Add them now, during their Week 8 bye, for a Week 9 home matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
- Detroit Lions D/ST: Your backup Week 9 option if San Francisco is gone. Detroit visits Miami.
- Jacksonville Jaguars D/ST: The main target. Colts, Ravens, Titans, Giants and Titans again from Weeks 8–12. Contenders should consider paying up.
1. San Francisco 49ers D/ST — Get Ahead of Week 9
The San Francisco 49ers are my first defensive target for dynasty and redraft managers looking ahead to Week 9.
San Francisco is on a bye in Week 8, which means some fantasy managers won’t want to spend a roster spot on a defense they can’t use this weekend. That’s exactly why you should be looking.
In Week 9, the 49ers host the Las Vegas Raiders.
If you stream defenses, you already know how frustrating the position can be. You can spend an entire week researching matchups, make the right pickup and still watch your defense give up 30 points while producing nothing for your fantasy team.
The answer isn’t always to find the defense with the biggest name. It’s to identify favorable matchups before the rest of your league gets there. San Francisco gives you that opportunity, and the Raiders game gives you a specific target for your Week 9 lineup. Rather than waiting until next week’s waiver period, you can make the move now and avoid competing with managers who suddenly realize they need a defense.
My advice: if the 49ers are available, add them before the Week 8 games begin.
Don’t let the bye week scare you away. You’re not buying points for this weekend. You’re buying a potential advantage for next weekend. And in a competitive dynasty league where every playoff spot matters, those small advantages add up.
2. Detroit Lions D/ST — Another Week 9 Target
If San Francisco is already rostered, my next target is the Detroit Lions. Detroit travels to Miami in Week 9, giving fantasy managers another defense to consider while planning ahead.
The advantage of looking at defenses early is that you have options. You aren’t forced into a desperate move on Sunday morning because your starting defense has a terrible matchup. You can compare the available defenses, examine your roster and decide before the competition starts bidding.
If the Lions are available, they’re a reasonable option for managers preparing for Week 9 without paying a premium for a defense that has already become a popular streaming target.
And remember, the goal isn’t necessarily to hold Detroit for the rest of the season. The goal is to get the matchup you want, collect the points and move forward with a plan.
San Francisco is my first choice for Week 9, with Detroit as another option worth targeting. But these first two pickups are really just the beginning. The move that interests me most is the one that takes a little more work.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars D/ST — The Move That Could Change Your Playoff Push
Now we get to the real target of this week’s article.
If the Jacksonville Jaguars defense is available in your dynasty league, go check immediately. If they’re rostered, contact the manager to see what it would take to acquire them.
And if you’re a serious contender with a realistic shot at the playoffs, don’t automatically dismiss the idea of trading a future second-round rookie pick for a defense that could help you win now.
I’m not saying you should give away future picks carelessly. I’m saying you need to weigh the value of a future second against the value of winning the games that decide whether you make the playoffs. Sometimes the right move is to save that pick. Other times, it’s to turn a future asset into an immediate advantage.
Jacksonville’s upcoming schedule is what makes this worth exploring.
The Jaguars’ Upcoming Defensive Schedule (Weeks 8–12)
| Week | Opponent | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Week 8 | vs. Indianapolis Colts | Sunday, Nov. 1 |
| Week 9 | at Baltimore Ravens | Thursday Night Football, Nov. 5 |
| Week 10 | at Tennessee Titans | Sunday, Nov. 15 |
| Week 11 | at New York Giants | Sunday, Nov. 22 |
| Week 12 | Tennessee Titans | Sunday, Nov 29 |
That’s a five-week stretch worth examining as you prepare for the fantasy playoffs.
The Ravens in Week 9 are the obvious challenge, and that’s why I’m also picking up San Francisco or Detroit to cover that week. Keep in mind the Jaguars play Baltimore on Thursday night, so make your Week 9 defense decision before Thursday’s kickoff.
I’m not suggesting every game is an automatic start or that Jacksonville will produce a huge fantasy score every week. But look at the bigger picture: Indianapolis, then Baltimore, then the Titans, the Giants and another matchup with Tennessee.
For a manager trying to get through the next five weeks without constantly searching the waiver wire for a new defense, that schedule creates an opportunity. Instead of making one defensive decision every week, you could have a solution in place for the regular season’s critical middle stretch.
You’re not just buying a defense. You’re buying flexibility, planning ahead and the chance to stop spending valuable roster moves on weekly defensive emergencies.
Why I’d Consider Trading a Future Second
Let’s be realistic. A future second-round rookie pick has value. It could become a useful young player, a trade chip or part of a package for a bigger move next offseason. You shouldn’t throw it away simply because you like a schedule.
But dynasty managers sometimes get so focused on protecting future picks that they forget the purpose of building a competitive team. You have to win games.
If your team is 5-2 and fighting for a playoff spot, acquiring Jacksonville could be worth exploring. If you’re 2-5 and likely headed toward a rebuild, I’d be much more reluctant to spend that kind of capital. Context matters.
Before making a trade:
- Check your league’s defensive scoring settings.
- Look at Jacksonville’s actual fantasy production, not just the schedule.
- Find out whether the manager is willing to negotiate.
I’d start with a lower offer and see whether you can land Jacksonville for a lesser asset. If the manager demands a future second, decide whether that price makes sense for your specific team.
The message isn’t to spend a second-round pick on any defense. It’s to recognize when a schedule advantage might be worth investing in. If Jacksonville helps you get through the next five weeks and secure a playoff berth, that investment pays off. If your team isn’t a legitimate contender, keep the pick.
The Five-Week Plan: Take Control of Your Destiny
Here’s how I’d approach the next few weeks.
Week 8: Check whether Jacksonville is available for its matchup against Indianapolis. If you need a one-week alternative, look at the defenses already on your roster before making another move.
Week 9: Start San Francisco against Las Vegas or Detroit at Miami. Jacksonville faces Baltimore on Thursday night, so having another defense ready gives you flexibility.
Week 10: Jacksonville gets Tennessee. If you acquired the Jaguars, this is one of the matchups you were planning for.
Week 11: Jacksonville faces the Giants. Keep evaluating the matchup and your league’s scoring, but this is another opportunity to use the defense you acquired.
Week 12: Tennessee comes up again for Jacksonville. By this point, you could be approaching the final stretch of the fantasy regular season with a playoff spot within reach.
This is how you get ahead. You don’t wait until every other manager is scrambling for a defense. You look at the schedule, identify the opportunity and make your move while the price is still reasonable.
No defense is guaranteed to deliver. Injuries, turnovers and unexpected offensive performances can change everything in a hurry. But a plan beats reacting to the waiver wire every week, and when the fantasy playoffs are approaching, being prepared matters.
Dynasty Waiver Wire Week 8 FAQ
Which defense should I pick up for Week 9?
The San Francisco 49ers are my first target, hosting the Las Vegas Raiders. The Detroit Lions are another option with their matchup at Miami. Check availability in your league before waivers run.
Why should I pick up a defense during its bye week?
Other managers are focused on immediate points and often overlook a defense they can’t use this weekend. Adding San Francisco during its Week 8 bye helps you avoid competing for it on waivers next week.
Should I trade a future second-round pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars defense?
Only if you’re a legitimate contender and the cost makes sense. A future second has meaningful dynasty value, so try a smaller offer first. Don’t sacrifice future assets for a short-term move if your team isn’t in position to make the playoffs.
What makes the Jaguars D/ST an interesting dynasty target?
Jacksonville’s schedule from Weeks 8–12 includes Indianapolis, Baltimore, Tennessee, the New York Giants and Tennessee again. That stretch lets managers plan several weeks ahead instead of searching for a new defense every week.
When do the Jaguars play the Ravens in Week 9?
Jacksonville plays at Baltimore on Thursday Night Football. Set your Week 9 defense before Thursday’s kickoff so you can bench the Jaguars and start a Sunday option like San Francisco or Detroit.
Should rebuilding dynasty teams make these defensive moves?
Generally, no. Rebuilding teams should preserve valuable future picks and focus on long-term assets. These moves are designed for contenders who need to win now and are fighting for a playoff spot.
What’s the biggest lesson from this week’s dynasty waiver wire?
Stop treating the waiver wire as a weekly emergency. Look ahead, identify favorable matchups and make roster moves before your competition catches up.
