Dynasty Waiver Wire Week 7: The Leftovers — A Potential League-Winning TE Is Sitting on Waivers

The Dynasty Waiver Wire Add Who Could Help You Win a Championship

Some weeks, the dynasty waiver wire is about finding a young wide receiver who might develop into something useful two years from now.

Other weeks, it’s about finding a player who could make a difference for your team right now.

This week, I’m looking at a tight end who could be sitting on your waiver wire simply because he’s on a bye.

Chig Okonkwo of the Washington Commanders isn’t the type of name that generates much excitement in dynasty circles. He’s been around long enough that managers know who he is, but he hasn’t consistently delivered the kind of fantasy production that makes him an automatic starter.

That could be about to change.

Washington has lost Terry McLaurin for the season following a serious knee injury that requires surgery. The Commanders are heading into their bye week with major questions about where their passing-game production will come from.

And while everybody looks at the remaining wide receivers, I’m looking at the tight end.

Chig Okonkwo could be one of the most interesting dynasty waiver wire additions of Week 7, especially for managers desperate for help at tight end.

The combination of a depleted offense, an extremely talented quarterback in Jayden Daniels and a potential increase in targets makes this a situation worth attacking before the next game.

Why Chig Okonkwo Could Be a Must-Add in Dynasty

Let’s look at the situation in Washington.

The Commanders have struggled to find consistent offensive production, and the loss of McLaurin removes one of their most established receiving options. Stefon Diggs is still a recognizable name, but he’s an aging receiver who has also dealt with injuries this season.

Beyond Diggs, there are plenty of questions.

Treylon Burks is back in the conversation. Luke McCaffrey, Dyami Brown and the other young receivers could get opportunities. But we’re talking about a passing offense that suddenly needs several players to step up.

That brings us to Okonkwo.

The Tennessee product has the athleticism to create problems for defenses, particularly when he gets opportunities to work across the middle of the field. He’s capable of making plays after the catch, and his skill set offers Washington something different from its remaining outside receivers.

Now consider who is throwing him the football.

Jayden Daniels.

Daniels is the type of quarterback who can elevate the fantasy value of the players around him. His mobility forces defenses to account for him as a runner, while his arm talent lets Washington attack defenses at multiple levels.

Of course, Daniels and the offense still need to execute. A depleted receiving corps doesn’t automatically mean every remaining player becomes a fantasy star.

But when a team loses its top established receiver, targets have to go somewhere. And tight ends can become particularly valuable in that situation.

Okonkwo doesn’t need to replace McLaurin’s production by himself. He simply needs to become a more consistent part of the passing game.

If his targets increase and he starts producing on a weekly basis, his fantasy value could rise quickly.

That’s the opportunity I’m buying before the rest of the dynasty community catches on.

The Commanders Are Running Out of Answers

Washington’s offensive situation is what makes this waiver wire target so intriguing.

The running game hasn’t provided the kind of consistent foundation fantasy managers hoped for. Jacory Croskey-Merritt has had his moments, Austin Ekeler is back in the picture, and Rachaad White can contribute, but the backfield hasn’t established itself as an unstoppable force.

That puts even more pressure on the passing game.

McLaurin’s season-ending injury leaves a significant hole. Diggs is still capable of contributing, but expecting him to carry the entire receiving corps at this stage of his career would be asking a lot.

And yes, we’re even back to discussing Treylon Burks as a potential contributor.

No disrespect to Burks, but when we’re revisiting players we’ve been waiting on for years, it tells you something about the current state of Washington’s receiving options.

The Commanders need playmakers.

Okonkwo is an intriguing candidate because he doesn’t need to win every route on the outside to become useful. He can work underneath, find space between linebackers and safeties, and give Daniels a reliable option when the defense takes away the first read.

That’s particularly important for a young quarterback operating without his most established receiver.

Washington doesn’t have to turn Okonkwo into Travis Kelce overnight. It just needs to find ways to get him involved.

If that happens, a tight end who has been overlooked in dynasty leagues could suddenly become a valuable fantasy starter.

Why I’m Buying Chig Okonkwo Now, Not After Week 8

Here’s the part that makes Okonkwo an especially interesting Week 7 dynasty waiver wire target.

He’s on a bye.

That might sound like a negative, but in dynasty leagues, it’s an opportunity.

Managers chasing immediate points often overlook players who can’t help their starting lineup this week. They’re more interested in a player who fills a hole now than someone who might have a bigger role when football resumes.

That creates a buying window.

Washington gets the bye week to regroup, evaluate its remaining weapons and prepare for life without McLaurin. The coaching staff has time to work out how to redistribute targets and adjust the passing game.

Okonkwo could emerge from that break with a more important role.

Will he suddenly become a top-five dynasty tight end? That’s asking too much based on what we know.

Could he become a consistent fantasy starter in a season where tight end production is hard to find? Absolutely worth considering.

If you’re streaming tight ends every week, hoping to stumble into five catches and a touchdown, why not take a shot on a player whose circumstances could improve?

Don’t let the bye week keep you from adding a player whose role could be growing.

This is the kind of move that might not look exciting on the transaction page today but could look very different a few weeks from now.

Could Chig Okonkwo Help You Win Your Dynasty League?

Let’s be clear: calling any waiver wire tight end a potential league winner comes with risk.

Okonkwo still needs to earn the targets. Washington could spread the football around, Diggs could remain the primary option, and the offense could continue to struggle.

There’s no guarantee that a depleted receiving corps translates into a fantasy breakout.

But the upside is worth pursuing.

Tight end is a position where finding a reliable starter can provide a real advantage. If you’re getting inconsistent production from the position, a player who begins seeing more targets can change your weekly lineup decisions.

Okonkwo has the athletic ability, a potentially favorable opportunity and a talented quarterback. The situation is developing at exactly the time dynasty managers should be looking for underappreciated players.

For rebuilding teams, he could be a useful addition whose value rises if his role expands.

For contenders, he could be the kind of waiver wire gamble that solves a weekly lineup problem.

For managers struggling to find any consistency at tight end, he deserves a serious look.

My recommendation: If Chig Okonkwo is available in your dynasty league, pick him up before Week 8.

That’s the entire point of the Leftovers column. Find the player before everybody else decides he’s worth owning.

Dynasty Waiver Wire Week 7: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chig Okonkwo worth adding in dynasty fantasy football?

Yes. Okonkwo is worth a speculative dynasty roster spot, particularly for managers who need help at tight end. Terry McLaurin’s season-ending injury creates questions about Washington’s passing-game distribution, and Okonkwo has an opportunity to become a more consistent target.

Why could Chig Okonkwo benefit from Terry McLaurin’s injury?

McLaurin’s absence leaves Washington without one of its most established receivers. The team will need to distribute those targets among its remaining wide receivers, tight ends and running backs. Okonkwo could benefit if he earns a larger role in the passing game.

Should I add Chig Okonkwo before Week 8?

If he’s available and you have a roster spot, I’d make the move now. His Week 7 bye could make him easier to overlook, giving dynasty managers a chance to add him before Washington’s next game.

Is Chig Okonkwo a potential league-winning tight end?

He’s a speculative upside play, not a guaranteed league winner. If his targets increase and he becomes a consistent part of the offense, he could provide valuable fantasy production at a difficult position. His role after Washington’s bye will be the key to watch.

Should rebuilding or contending dynasty teams prioritize Okonkwo?

Both can make the case. Rebuilding teams can add a player whose value might increase with a larger role, while contenders can look for a solution to inconsistent tight end production. The ideal price is a waiver claim or modest FAAB investment rather than an aggressive trade.

Who should I target in the Week 7 dynasty waiver wire Leftovers?

Chig Okonkwo is my featured Week 7 target. Washington’s depleted receiving corps, Jayden Daniels’ talent and the opportunity for a larger role make him a player worth adding before the next game.
